She unexpectedly died shortly after the Triangle of Sadness film release from sepsis, which was caused by the bacteria called Capnocytophaga. This was complicated by the fact that she had lost her spleen several years before in a car accident. She was just 32.

She was excluded from the "In Memoriam" segment of the 95th Academy Awards ceremony despite her film Triangle of Sadness (2022) being nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture, that same year.

In October 2008, Dean and fellow model Ashton Schnehage survived a car crash. She was hospitalised at Milnerton Medi-Clinic.

[on Triangle of Sadness (2022)] I'd only seen one of Ruben's films before auditioning for him: I randomly picked The Square (2017) and saw it at the Angelika in New York. I usually mix popcorn and chocolate as a movie treat but I didn't touch it because I didn't want to miss out on such a unique, intriguing and brilliant film. By the end, I was so buzzing I felt like I could run a marathon.
