Mini bio

  • There is a moment on stage when the lights narrow, the audience holds its breath, and a character's truth becomes undeniable. That moment is why Mandar Kulkarni has spent over two decades on the stage and why he keeps coming back. Since his artistic debut in 2000, Mandar has built one of Pune's most substantial careers in Marathi theatre and television. On screen, he has brought depth and precision to over a dozen productions across India's leading channels, from Agnihotra and Lakshya on Star Pravah to Radha Prem Rangi Rangali on Colors Marathi, Ti Phularani on Sony Marathi, and Ghetla Vasa Taku Nako on Zee Marathi. Each role a different world. Each performance, a full commitment. But the stage is where Mandar is most fully himself. With more than 250 theatrical productions to his name, he has inhabited characters that range from the quietly broken to the fiercely defiant, shaped by the guidance of India's most formidable theatre minds, including Satyadev Dubey, Vijaya Mehta, Makarand Deshpande, Satish Alekar, and Sanjana Kapoor, among others. For Mandar, theatre is not performance. It is excavation. And that belief extends beyond the stage. Through his theatre group Natakwala, he has trained over 4,000 students across age groups and disciplines, and has taught acting at institutions including the National School of Drama (TIE), the University of Pune's Centre for Performing Arts, Symbiosis International, MIT School of Performing Arts, and several others. Teaching, for him, is another form of the same work, helping others find the truth inside a character. Rooted in Pune, driven by craft, and committed to the living tradition of Marathi theatre, Mandar Kulkarni is not just a performer. He is a practitioner, a teacher, and a keeper of the stage.
