- Raphael Nercessian Oliveira, known professionally as Raphael Nercessian, was raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in a family connected to cinema and the arts. He is the son of filmmaker Xavier de Oliveira and Armênia Nercessian, whose surname he later adopted professionally. He studied Journalism at Universidade Veiga de Almeida and built an independent career across writing, music, film and early internet culture.
In the 1990s, using the nickname BarMan, Nercessian founded Canal Barra on BRASnet, a Rio de Janeiro-based IRC community that later became the foundation for his project #barra join. He is also known for his music contribution to The Psychic (2011) and for his appearance in the comedy Solteira Quase Surtando (2020). His work often returns to memory, youth culture, online identity and the emotional life of Rio de Janeiro before social media.
