Mini bio

  • Elahe Massumi is an Iranian-born film maker and producer, whose work has been acclaimed internationally.

Born in Esfahan, she moved to the US in 1978, and to New York in 1986, where she earned a Master in Fine Arts at the Pratt Institute.

Since her debut, her eyes and voice have been giving a clear face to the motivations and consequences linked to raw survival, when people's morality and dignity are challenged by the oppression, prejudices and instabilities that still exist in some areas of the world.

Elahe's work does not allow itself to be intimidated. On the contrary, it breaks the barrier of silence and hypocrisy, especially when it comes to denouncing and defending the right of children and women. Her purpose is to make sure that their cries are not muffled by the indifference of those who live far, from otherwise unthinkable realities.

She begins her career by making 16 short films, in format of art installations, until her breakthrough in 2018, with her long feature Roxane. The film, recipient of several international awards, explores men's abuse of power over women forced into temporary marriages and prostitution, through a new and by then unique animation style.

Her recent projects, Violin and Dark Heritage, focus respectively on the life of a renown Iranian female violinist -the victim of domestic abuse- who ends up in a Turkish prison (inspired by true events), and on the exploitation of minor in Congo's coltan mines.
