Served as the president of Gainax Company until 1995 when he and studio tax accountant Yoshikatsu Iwasaki were arrested on allegations of tax fraud. In 1999 Sawamura and Iwatsaki were found guilty of concealing 1.56 billion yen worth of income earned from the popular series
"Neon Genesis Evangelion" (1995).
