Biography

Mahak Gupta is a freelance senior colorist and educator based in Mumbai.

She started her career as a data manager and on-set editor on a bilingual South Indian film in 2010 during the celluloid to digital transition in the film industry. She worked on multiple ads with DP Shanker Raman before joining DP Sylvester Fonseca's team for Island City (2015) as a dailies colorist. Mahak's last project as DIT and on-set colorist was Mira Nair's BBC series A Suitable Boy (2020) with cinematographer Declan Quinn.

Mahak has been working with Bridge PostWorks since 2016. Her work in Achal Mishra's debut film Gamak Ghar (2019) brought her critical acclaim and led to many inspiring collaborations with filmmakers spread across 20 languages around the world.

Having pursued journalism before switching to film editing, Mahak naturally leans towards non-fiction. She is most proud of her work in Shaunak Sen's sophomore doc All That Breathes (2022) which won Grand Jury Award at Sundance Film Festival, ASC Award & was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards, 2023. Flickering Lights (2023) won Best Cinematography Award at IDFA. Her films have been selected at Energa Camerimage for the last three consecutive years.

As a Senior Colorist, she is a trusted collaborator for some of the awe-inspiring filmmakers of our time. Her latest work includes Konkana Sen Sharma's short The Mirror in the Netflix anthology Lust Stories 2 (2023), Vikramaditya Motwane's doc series Indi(r)a's Emergency (2023), Varun Grover's debut All India Rank (2024), Dominic Sangma's Rapture (2023), Mongolian director Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir's short Shiluus (2020), Karishma Dube's short Bittu (2020) which was shortlisted for Academy Awards, Faraz Ali's Shoebox (2022) for which she was nominated for Filmlight Colour Awards 2022 and Nishi Dugar's Anaar Daana (2024) was in the Generation Kplus section at Berlinale this year. She has recently completed Sooni Taraporewala's most awaited Amazon original series Waack Girls.

Mahak is the co-founder of The Colorists Workshop and teaches color grading at film schools across India. She is a part of the jury panel for Filmlight Colour Awards 2024.
