Founder of the architectural and urban design practice, Michael Sorkin Studio, as well as of Terreform Center for Advanced Urban Research.

Served as the architecture critic for The Village Voice in New York City since the 1980s (until it folded) while also contributing critical works to publications like The Architectural Review, Architectural Record, The Nation and AN,.

Sorkin earned a BA from the University of Chicago in 1969, an MA in English from Columbia in 1970, a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974 and an architecture degree from Harvard in the 1970s.

In 2019 AIA awarded Sorkin the 2019 Collaborative Achievement Award for his 40-plus years of helping to diversify the field of design.

Received a Guggenheim Fellowship for Humanities.

Sorkin was awarded the Design Mind award by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Sorkin was the co-president of the Institute for Urban Design, an education and advocacy organization, and vice- president of the Urban Design Forum in New York.

Michael Sorkin Studio was a finalist in the 2019 Big Ideas for Small Lots NYC competition.
