There's the responsibility to continue the theatre (Griffith, Bauer, Protazanov), the responsibility to the "natural world" (Rohmer, Straub & Huillet), a newspaperman's responsibility to the public (Fuller, Sembène, Chaplin, Ivens), a responsibility to avoid sentimentality (Pialat, Davies), a responsibility to avoid "cinema" (Bresson)-the list goes on. What these responsibilities have in common is that they are as capable of destroying a film as they are of creating one.
