Biography

  • Kaveh Mazaheri, born in Tehran, Iran, is a prominent figure in the new generation of Iran's independent cinema. Beginning his professional filmmaking journey in 2007, he has directed some short fiction films, over twenty documentaries, and a feature film. Many of his works address critical social issues, with a particular emphasis on women's challenges. A prime example is "Retouch," which is regarded by numerous Iranian cinema critics as one of the country's most distinguished short films. This remarkable film secured more than 80 international accolades, notably achieving recognition at five Oscar-qualifying festivals: Tribeca, Krakow, Palm Springs, Tirana, and Stockholm in 2017. Celebrating the film's significance, the Iranian Cinema Museum in Tehran has dedicated a booth to display awards and items associated with "Retouch."

In 2020, Mazaheri's debut feature film "Botox" premiered, capturing the best film and best screenplay awards at the Torino Film Festival. Within Iran, it was awarded the best first feature film at the prominent Fajr International Film Festival.

Outside of his filmography, Mazaheri has actively contributed to the film community through teaching, conducting workshops, and serving as a jury member at both national and international film festivals.

Trivia

  • Following the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement in Iran and Mazaheri's participation in social protests, he, a supporter of the movement and an advocate for change in Iran, openly criticized the pervasive influence of security institutions in the country's film industry. In a symbolic gesture of protest, he withdrew his two Crystal Simorghs - the pinnacle of Iranian cinema recognition - from the Fajr Film Festival. Mazaheri publicly declared his unwillingness to create works of art under the Iranian regime, which he saw as oppressive, and subsequently moved to France.
