Biography

Markus Wormstorm is a composer living in Cape Town. Since 2001 he has scored many commercials, short films and produced a handful of albums. He started out in electronic music and overtime was drawn to classic composition. In 2013 Markus made his feature film debut for which he won a Safta Award in 2015.

Markus was born in 1981 in the South African.

He moved with Cape Town with Anri Du Toit (also known as Yolandi Visser from Die Antwoord) at the age of 19 (2001) and began his musical career. He dropped out of music college within his first year as he has begun making money from music composition. He wrote the soundtrack for his first commercial at nineteen, directed by multi award winning director Daniel Levi (Independ films)

Markus them graduated from the Pro Arte School of music, art and drama. At school he created a number of theatrical writings and won school awards for music and literature.

After moving to Cape Town, Wormstorm formed collaborations with other musicians. The earliest of these was IDM producer Felix Laband.

In 2001 Markus was signed to two separate record labels. African Dope located in Cape Town and Sound-Ink in New York alongside stable mates M Sayeed of Anti Pop Consortium and MF Doom. This brought him to the attention of rapper/composer/protagonist/satirist Waddy Jones, front man of Johannesburg's hip-hop group Max Normal later frontman for the band Die Antwoord. Markus collaborated with Waddy Jones and Sibot on a concept album called Constructus in 2002.

Constructus Corporation disbanded in early 2003. Thereafter Markus and Sibot intensified their collaborations, giving rise to The Real Estate Agents. This collaboration is credited for introducing the South African market to live electronic music performance.

Markus and Sibot started a audio studio called Saythankyou. The studio produced music for many commercials between 2003 and 2009 and raked in a number of awards. Markus's works have provided the soundtrack for ad campaigns for the likes of Audi, Nokia, Coke to name a few.

In 2004 Markus' self-titled debut South African album, bundled as part of the 3CD pack The Real Estate Agents (ADOPECD012 African Dope Records 2004).

Wormstorm is co-founder, writer, producer and composer for the animation collective The Blackheart Gang. The group shot their film The Tale of How (2006), which toured with Resfest in 2007 and has won several animation awards including Chanel Plus - France.

In 2006 Markus and Spoek Mathambo started a band called Sweat.X who signed a record deal with the UK label, Citinite, in 2007.

2012 Markus created Biblo.tv an boutique online music search engine geared towards commercial licensing. Biblo.tv's motto is "library music that doesn't suck."

In 2013 He released a 12 track album, "Not, I but A friend" on German label M=maximal, and was distributed through Kompakt.fm

In 2013 Markus founded Honeymoon Studios, which consists of two full service studios based in Cape Town.

In 2014 he stared in the documentary Future Sounds Of Mzansi, as was interviewed as one of the pioneers of electronic music in South Africa. In that year he also created the an online store aptly called The Wormstore. In that year he also created Honeymoon Podcasts. His studio created three episodes in collaboration with the Arthur C. Clark winning author Lauren Beukes and political analyst, award winning author and historian Max Du Preez. In April 2015 Markus won a Safta Award for Best Achievement in Original Score[3] for his work on the feature film Four Corners.

Later that year he released a self titled EP under the pseudonym of Akira on his own label Biblo Records for digital download.
