Biography

Ian was born in Australia and has worked extensively in documentaries as a Director, Writer, Editor, Cinematographer and Line Producer in Australia, Europe and Asia. Best known for his work in social and educational documentary, Ian has been an integral part of the Australian film industry.

In the 1960s Ian worked as a stage and television actor in Sydney, then attended the London Film School (1966-7) and worked as a film editor and stringer cameraman in the UK and Europe. In 1968 he shot two documentaries in the USSR. He joined Film Australia in 1969 and was a line producer on two large documentary series: Our Asian Neighbours, Thailand (1972) and Indonesia (1974) and edited and directed a slate of broadcast documentaries including The Ships That Flew (1974) for Network 10.

Whilst he was Head Centre for Media Studies at the University of Canberra (Australia), he developed an international reputation for educational media production (1978-1991). During this time he was writer/director and often editor of several educational broadcast documentaries including two French programs for Canal+ (France) and a television series on education in China for WIN-TV.

From 1991 - 2006, Ian was Professor of Interactive Media at the University of Hong Kong and also an independent documentary producer and theatre director. During this time he directed several documentaries including; "The Outsider's Gaze" (France, Germany and Spain), "A Festival of Art and Life" (Bali) and a TV series on infectious diseases (Hong Kong). In recent times, Ian has specialised in Australia-China projects, including a trilogy of feature films entitled "Dumpling, Tea & Rice".

Runs a production company called Peace Mountain Productions with fellow director Jun Xiao. Together they have more than 50 years production experience in Australia, China, South East Asia and Europe.
