Ekubo was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to Jane Ekubo, a fashion designer/businesswoman and Mazi Alex Ekubo, a petroleum marketer. The second of four siblings, he had two sisters and a brother. He grew up in several Nigerian cities, owing to his father's job description. He spoke the Hausa & Igbo languages fluently. Ekubo was educated at the K. Kotun nursery & primary school (Lagos) and then at the Federal Government College Daura (Katsina) before proceeding to the University of Calabar where he graduated with an LLB degree in Law in 2008.
