Biography

Born in Milano, Fabio Bastianello moved to Dardago, a town near Pordenone, when he was 9. As a child, he soon showed a deep interest for art and he began to express his inner world by drawing, sculpting and photography. He studied at Ermanno Olmi's "Ipotesi Cinema" school and has attended a number of specialization courses and masters, such as Macintosh computer graphic, photography, video production, Maya (software), cinematography, graphic art for advertising, acting. At 24 years old, thanks to his creativity and problem solving skills, he won a tender against some multinationals, regarding the advertising campaign of "Tigullio" public transportation. This was the starting point of his business and creative career. His movies explore seemingly normal worlds, exposing different social contexts without any judgment. Fabio aims at describing borderline situations though hyper realistic portraits. His work is often described as visually "dirty" and very close to reality. This visual approach is sometimes underlined by the use of the "mockumentary technique", device that helps the audience immerse into the movie. The deep sense of realism in his work is also achieved by the use of unprofessional actors, whom he trains by making them live as their characters. Moreover, his films are often shot in one long take, film device that further stresses the sense of truth. In 1990 Bastianello writes a subject named "Cristina" that immediately became a screenplay, after meeting the interest of Ermanno Olmi and the director Tony De Gregorio that precedes Sliding Doors (1997). As a creative director at Clic Studios, Fabio produced a lot of spots and advertising campaigns for renowned brands such as Fiat, Unicredit, Fendi, Missoni, Aviva, Julius Meinl. He made video reports for "Striscia la Notizia", "Le Iene" and "Lucignolo", a number of music and backstage video clips for popular singers and DJs, such as Paolo Noise, Joe T Vannelli, Davide De Marinis and Marco di Noia. The first movie he directed was "Secondo Tempo" (2010), an hyper realistic portrait of the world football hooligans. The film was shot in a single 105-minutes take and won multiple awards such as "best full - length film", the final second place at the Nino Manfredi festival (2010), "best full - length film" and "Nino d'oro" at the Cinema&Ciociaria festival, FICTS finalist, "new ways of communication" award at the Asti film festival. At the moment, Fabio Bastianello works as a movie director, creative director, graphic, cameraman, editor, event manager, image and luxury advisor. He also teaches acting, computer graphic, editing and directing. 1997 he buys, with a long term personal financing, a Silicon Graphic work station and Maya 1.0, becoming one of the first 20 licensees of Alias Wavefront. In 2014, he founded the production company Overall Pictures.
