Biography

Elina Haavio-Mannila was born on August 3, 1933 in Helsinki, Finland. She was married to Olavi Mannila. She died on September 26, 2025 in Helsinki, Finland.

One of Finland's most famous sociologists, a pioneer in gender studies and a pioneer for women in science.

Her mother, Elsa Enäjärvi-Haavio and her father, Martti Haavio, were folk poetry researchers, writers, and social activists.

Sparked debate as early as 1968 with her work Suomalainen nainen ja mies (The Finnish Woman and Man). The study addressed the status and role of gender in politics as well as family and working life.
