Her father is a dentist. In summer 2019, she took a brief hiatus from acting and worked as a dental assistant at her father's clinic. She said that the worst part of the job was dealing with the various bad smells.

Her first onscreen kiss was with Nicholas Alexander Chavez, her co-star on General Hospital (1963).

In addition to acting, she is a trained stunt performer. During her final scene as Esme Prince on General Hospital (1963) before she exited the show in 2024, stunt doubles were hired for Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Spencer Cassadine) and Tabyana Ali (Trina Robinson), while Avery performed her own stunts.

Her father attended college with actor Rodney Van Johnson, who appeared on Passions (1999) alongside Brook Kerr, Avery's co-star on General Hospital (1963). Van Johnson gave Avery some tips for starring on a soap opera after Avery was cast as Esme Prince.

Prior to being cast as Esme on General Hospital (1963), she was considered for the short-lived role of Jordan on The Young and the Restless (1973).

She was one of 600 girls who auditioned for the role of Esme on General Hospital.

She graduated from Los Angeles Valley College in 2023 with an associate's degree in business. She completed her degree while filming her scenes on General Hospital.

As a young child she struggled with a sensory integration disorder, and began taking dance lessons at around age 3 as a form of physical therapy to improve her coordination. She tried several styles of dance and stuck with ballet.

Her role as Esme on General Hospital was initially supposed to be a short-term contract that would last for approximately one month. However, she ended up being offered a three-year contract.
