Biography

R.L. Maynard

Overview

  • Birth name
    Renee L. Maynard

Biography

  • Born and raised in the Caribbean federation of St. Christopher & Nevis, R. L. Maynard moved to New York City in the Summer of 2000 to pursue a long held passion for media arts. A graduate of Baruch College in New York, the dream was to produce a film which showed the talent as a writer and director. "Real-Life Mallory" is the first major, short film, by R. L. Maynard.

With Martin Scorcese and Katherine Bigelow as major influences, R. L. continues to write and develop stories which speak to the human condition. Favorite films include "Clue" (1985), for its irreverent humor, "Gladiator" (2000) described as 'my generation's "Ben-Hur" and "Contact" (1997) - an amazing piece, with multiple layers of the human experience. However, no other film has had quite the impact as has "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994). "If I can make a film, only half as moving, poignant and inspirational as 'Shawshank', I will be a very happy person.", says the new Director. "Shawshank made me want to make films, not just watch them."

With successful stints at MTV and The Tribeca Film Festival completed, R. L. feels blessed for the opportunities, and remains vigilant in making a personal mark on the industry.

A quiet activist, R. L. Maynard hopes to continue to produce films which celebrate the human experience, in glory and defeat, with strong messages and relatable characters.
