Biography

Vera Cáslavská is a Czechoslovak gymnast and Czech sports official.

She won a total of 22 international titles between 1959 and 1968 including seven Olympic gold medals, four world titles and eleven European championships. Cáslavská is the most decorated Czech gymnast in history and is one of only two female gymnasts, along with Soviet Larisa Latynina, to win the all-around gold medal at two consecutive Olympics.

She was inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 1991 and the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1998.

After retiring from competition, she coached gymnasts and served as president of the Czech Olympic Committee.

She was a vocal critic of the Soviet Union, and was forced into hiding after signing the 2000 Words manifesto advocating political reform in Czechoslovakia. She was later given permission to rejoin the Olympic team, which she did just weeks before the Mexico City Olympics. She won gold in the vault, the individual all-round, floor exercises, and uneven bars, and turned her head in silent protest during the Soviet Union national anthem.

She was a top gymnast who won seven Olympic gold medals and four silvers in the 1960s.
