Biography

The last of five children born in Dallas Texas to an opera singer mother and an ex-Army paratrooper father from NYC, Liam Gowing moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18 to attend UCLA, graduating from the honors program magna cum laude four years later. A singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist musician practically since birth, Gowing aimed to be a recording artist upon leaving school but after a personal tragedy, he put his music on the back-burner and focused on a career in journalism.

Writing first for LA Weekly and SPIN, which published his expansive ASME award-nominated piece on the death of Elliott Smith, "Mr. Misery," he eventually became the first Los Angeles City Editor for The Onion's arts-and-entertainment publication, The A.V. Club. Moving next to a staff writer/content producer position at the Los Angeles Times, Gowing conceived and wrote the weekly print column and internet-video series, "Action Man," a tongue-and-cheek recreation/adventure column that followed Gowing as he learned how to knit a scarf at a ladies' sewing circle, squared off against a teenage chess champion, learned how to fly a plane, and even obtained his ministerial license and married a couple on Valentine's Day in the wrestling ring at Lucha VaVoom.

Approached for the column's story rights by Senator Entertainment following a particularly poignant installment in which Gowing traveled to Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp's 10th Anniversary blowout in Las Vegas, Gowing became a screenwriter, knocking out a fictionalized script inspired by his real-life experiences at Rock Camp with veteran writer Steven Goldman. At this time, Gowing also began acting, appearing in various shorts, feature-length films, and music videos, including "Criminal" by Richie Ramone and "Attention Cherie" by April March, both directed by friend Steve Hanft. After the death of his father, however, Gowing returned to music, releasing 2013's "Drunk Sluts Forever"-featuring just Gowing on vocals, guitar, piano, bass, drums and a host of virtual instruments-a DIY album KCSN program director and DJ Marc "Mookie" Kaczor hailed as "an instant indie rock classic."

After writing, producing and appearing in three music videos for the project, Gowing began to work as an educator, eventually accepting a job as a university lecturer in China in 2017. While living there, Gowing began to work on Film-and-TV soundtracks with film composer Timo Chen, which resulted in the musical collaboration, "One for the Books." During the following five years in Shanghai, while overseeing a Western Classics book reports writing program at China's #3-ranked university SJTU, Gowing recorded over two dozen tracks for his followup double album, Mother Lode: Alpha + Omega, released in November 2022. After producing a music video for the first virtual single "Joshua's Mistake," Gowing approved the use of the song for the soundtrack of Fast & Furious star Sung Kang's forthcoming directorial debut, Shaky Shivers.
