Biography

Chicago Public School & NYC Educator Okema "Seven" Gunn wrote, directed, and produced a short film called, "A Sisterhood of Signatures" (2019) with the help of renowned actress/producer Cynda Williams (from Mo' Betta Blues & One False Move). She co-wrote, co-produced, and directed the short film "Black Girl Vs. Ambiguous" (2020) with mentee 13-year-old Maya Hooks. In the Summer of 2020, Seven Gunn wrote, directed, and produced a short called "Black Mama Sable" (2020) through the Digital Storytelling Institute Program (UChicago Arts Logan Center/Community Workshop of Chicago). All 3 of her films have been in various film festivals totaling over 30 festivals. "Black Mama Sable" was an official selection of the Bronze Lens Film Festival of Atlanta (which is Oscar qualifying for shorts).

Seven Gunn also does Film/TV critique under 7 Gunn Media and has a passion for writing poetry as well. Her interest in films and television came from watching movies/television and particularly "At the Movies" with Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel. When she makes films her inspirations come from the AFI top 100 influences over the years and some classics from the African Diaspora.
