- He graduated from Yale University with a degree in history in 1957.
- His father was a Russian émigré who founded La Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, which published editions of the classics. In 1941, the family fled the Nazis and settled in New York.
- In 1962, he joined Pantheon Books. He edited his first best seller, "The Tin Drum" by 'Gunter Grass', shortly after his arrival. He became editor-in-chief and later, managing director. He often subsidized the publication of important works with profits from better-selling books.
