Biography

  • Andrew Gillingham is a filmmaker and actor based on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. A graduate of Simon Fraser University’s film production program, his work is emotionally honest and character-driven, often exploring queer intimacy, power, and the tension between connection and self-preservation.

Andrew has written, directed, and produced multiple short films that have screened internationally at festivals including Raindance, Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF), and Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival. His short film Prawn (2018) was distributed by Premium Films, aired on Canal+ France, and was a finalist on CBC’s Short Film Face Off. His more recent short Cups (2023) premiered at Flickers’ RIIFF and went on to screen at Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Vancouver Short Film Festival, where it won Best BC Short and Best Performance for actor Diana Bang. Bang was also later nominated for a UBCP/ACTRA Award for her performance in the film.

In addition to directing, Andrew has worked extensively as an editor, producer, and casting director, and previously assisted casting on film and television projects, deepening his collaborative, performance-focused approach to storytelling. As an actor, he has appeared in network television including The Good Doctor and Firefly Lane, bringing a grounded, truthful presence to screen performances.

Andrew is drawn to raw storytelling that moves audiences emotionally while leaving space for humour and humanity. He is currently developing his debut feature film, The Weight of Us, a deeply personal work exploring love, trauma bonds, and the cost of emotional attachment in contemporary queer relationships.
