- Derek Warwick received a phone call from Bernie Ecclestone, former owner of the Brabham team. Ecclestone stated that he appreciated the fact that Warwick was the only available top driver who refrained from calling him five minutes after the death of Elio de Angelis in May 1986. Ecclestone asked if Warwick would like to drive for the team, an invitation the English driver accepted.
- 1983 Dutch Grand Prix, Warwick finished 4th place (3 points) and scored his and the Toleman team's first ever GP points.
- Ayrton Senna vetoed Derek Warwick from joining the Lotus team, saying that Lotus were not able to run competitive cars for two top drivers at the same time.
