Biography

Andris Gauja is a writer and director based in Riga, Latvia. He is the founder of the production company Riverbed. Gauja is currently working on Nothing Can Stop Us Now, a relationship thriller which will be his second narrative film since his debut fiction film The Lesson (2014). Gauja's fiction debut was selected for Montreal World Films festival, Chicago IFF, Moscow IFF and other festivals. The Lesson (2014) also became the box-office hit of the year in Latvia. Previously, Andris worked on documentary films, most notably Family Instinct (2010), which received Grand-Prix at the AFI Fest (previously Silverdocs), got the nomination for Best Mid-length documentary at IDFA (2010) in Amsterdam, and was selected for more than 25 international film festivals around the world.

After graduating his screenwriting studies at the Latvian Academy of Culture, Andris Gauja has produced, written and directed documentaries (including the award-winning Family Instinct, (2010, IDFA nomination, Cinema Eye Honors nomination, World's Best Documentary prize at AFI-Docs (ex-Silverdocs) etc.) as well as two narrative films (Nothing Can Stop Us Now (2019, 9 nominations at the Latvian National Film Prize "Lielais Kristaps"), The Lesson (2014, Montreal, Chicago, Moscow IFF etc., the film became a box-office hit in Latvia). Andris is especially interested in character-driven films and in his own work, he often dives into 'uncomfortable' and thought-provoking topics.
