Whether it is a background or principal part, research it off set. Bring realism to it. Know it inside and out. Walk, talk, move with self-assuredness. Interact with your fellow actors. Make each and every scene excellent.

While on set, strive to make your fellow actor look good...when you do that, you will look and perform at your natural best.

On set, I would rather be accused of being kind, decent and respectful than beg for a second chance to make a good first impression.
