Wieland Wagner was the elder of two sons of
Siegfried Wagner and
Winifred Wagner, grandson of composer
Richard Wagner, and great-grandson of composer
Franz Liszt through Wieland's paternal grandmother. He was the brother of stage director
Wolfgang Wagner.
