Biography

Ruy Iskandar was born in Indonesia, and grew up attending the Jakarta Intercultural School in Jakarta, Indonesia. Growing up, acting initially did not seem like a viable career path for him. However, near the end of his high school years, he took a theater class thinking it would be an easy option, which instead sparked a deep passion for the craft. Seeking formal training, he later relocated to the United States and attended New York University's Graduate Acting Program, graduating in 2010.

Iskandar initially built a strong foundation in theater, performing in regional productions as well as on Broadway and off-Broadway stages. His stage credits include appearing in the Lincoln Center Theater production of Macbeth (2013) and starring in David Henry Hwang's The Dance and the Railroad (2010) at the Signature Theatre.

Transitioning into television and film, he began securing various guest and supporting screen roles, including appearances in The Blacklist (2014) and the pilot episode of Gotham (2014). He then took on a series regular role as Sebalos in the comedy series Benders (2015) and later appeared in the feature film Yes Day (2021). His career achieved further global recognition when he was cast as Lieutenant Jee in Netflix's live-action fantasy adaptation Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024), where his role was notably expanded to add deeper narrative significance compared to the original animated source material.

In addition to his performance career, he has worked as a public speech director and executive presence coach.
