Biography

North African writer, director and actor Anouar H. Smaine spent his childhood between the cities of Paris and Alger due to the nature of his parents' work. His mother was a French Professor and his father a Playwright, film and theater Director and Actor. After moving to the US as a teenager, Anouar earned a Bachelor's in Computer Science, then two Master's degrees in Political Science, Fine Arts and World Languages from Eastern Michigan University. Years later, Anouar completed his filmmaking training at the New York Film Academy - Los Angeles - and went on to write, direct and produce some short films among which are 'Axis of Evil', 'Sharia' and 'Battle Fields', earning him Awards and acclaim in US, European, North African, Middle Eastern and Asian festival circuits. Over the years, his films would compete in over 30 countries. Being multi-lingual (French, Spanish, Arabic, Middle Eastern & North African dialects, and a vast array of European & African accents) also helped Anouar find success as a Voice Actor with credits in Academy Award Nominated films 'I Lost my Body' opposite Dev Patel, 'The Life Ahead' opposite Sofia Loren, and 'The Ballad of Lefty Brown' lending his voice to legendary actor Peter Fonda in the French version of the film. A passionate storyteller, Anouar's multi-cultural background, his extensive travelling and ability to connect with the human element sets him apart as a Writer, Director, and Actor. He calls Los Angeles home.

Anouar holds two Masters degrees from Eastern Michigan University; Political Science and French, and received his Filmmaking training at the New York Film Academy (Universal Studios - Hollywood campus). By the age of 20, Anouar had lived on three continents (Africa, Europe, and America).

Besides English, Anouar speaks, reads, and writes French and Arabic perfectly.

Inherited the equivalent of $10 from his father's friend; french philosopher and playwright Jacques Dapoigny when he passed.

Favorite directors are Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, Alejandro Inarritu, and Steven Soderbergh.

Both his father and uncle participated in the "Battle of Algiers"; the first in film and the second in the actual battle that inspired the famous Gillo Pontecorvo film.

Understanding what's expected of you as an actor, is half way to fulfilling your director's vision.

When making a film, surround yourself with people who are committed and passionate, not with heroes.

As a filmmaker, you can either believe in yourself or go home.
