Giulia Grandinetti grew up in a small town in central Italy. She is a multifaceted artist driven by research and experimentation in her artistic journey. She began studying dance at age three. However, when she started playing with her father's video camera at age thirteen, she discovered her desire to become a director, despite the absence of a movie theater in her hometown.
In 2008, she moved to Rome and started studying acting at the Cinecittà Academy. Acting enabled her to combine her background in dance with her aspiration to become a film director. During her training, she studied with Margotta, Piccardi, Abraham, Pardeillhan, Antonelli, and Buglioni. In 2010, she made her debut as the lead actress in Love's Labour's Lost, directed by Álvaro Piccardi, at the Globe Theater in Rome. In 2012, she expanded her studies to include international courses, attending the Odin Teatret in Holstebro and researching the dance world of Pina Bausch and physical theater. She graduated from the University of Roma Tre with a master's degree in literature and philosophy.
She approached film directing in 2013.
From 2013 to 2020, she worked on ''Alice and the Land of Wonders'', an independent project written, directed, and produced by her. She raised funds for it online.
In 2019, she began working on a trilogy of dystopian short films.
The first is ''Guinea Pig'', premiered at the 20th Trieste Science+Fiction Festival in 2020, co-directed with Andrea Benjamin Manenti and produced by Matteo Vecchione and Francesco Paolo Conticello. (50 festival selections/ 15 awards)
The second film, ''Tria - about the feeling of betrayal'' was shot in 35mm in Italian and Greek. It was produced by Lupin Film and distributed by Flavio Armone of Lights On. TRIA premiered at the La Biennale di Venezia Orizzonti Short Films Competition at the 79th Venice Film Festival in 2022. To date, it has received more than 110 festival selections and around 50 international awards.
The third is ''Majonezë'', which was filmed in Ersekë, Albania, in Albanian and Serbian. It was produced by her and the film production company Lupin Film, and supported as an associate production by London Production Studios and Close Film. The film premiered at Alice nella Città in October 2024 (winner) and went on to be selected for around 80 festivals, winning 70 awards. The film was a finalist for the David di Donatello and Nastri d'Argento awards in 2025. The film won the Best Live Action Short Film category at two Oscar-qualifying festivals: the Brussels Short Film Festival and the Afi Fest in Los Angeles.
She is preparing ''Jaune et Bleu'', a feature film produced by Lupin Film and set in France. The film was a finalist in the Up&Coming Italia category at the Torino Film Lab and won the Gruvi Award at the 20th edition of Sofia Meetings in 2023. The film was also selected for the UnBox Academy at the MIA Market in 2025 as the project of the Italian Film Academy - David di Donatello Awards.
Since 2020, she has been a digital nomad, traveling the world and working online as a vocal and acting coach, as well as a writing coach. She is creatively obsessed with understanding human beings and fascinated by dystopian themes. She loves exploring the world of dreams, the human unconscious, and the boundaries of taboo. The body is the starting point for each of her creations.
