Biography

Abigail Chapin

Overview

  • Born
Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA

Biography

  • Abigail Chapin was born in Brooklyn, New York City. She's the daughter of Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Tom Chapin, the sister of Lily Chapin, and the half-sister of Jessica Craven and Jonathan Craven. Moreover, her grandfather was jazz drummer James Chapin and her uncle was noted singer/songwriter Harry Chapin of "Cats in the Cradle" fame. Abigail attended a Waldorf school in New York's Hudson Valley whose arts-based education included training in orchestral music and studying the complicated harmonies of Sharp-note songs and old English folk ballads. Chapin sang on over a dozen studio albums throughout both elementary school and high school. After finishing college, Abigail and Lily relocated to Los Angeles, California and formed the folk-pop group, "The Chapin Sisters", in 2004, with Jessica Craven. The Chapin Sisters have sung vocals on albums for such artists as Vetiver, Lavender Diamond, Gary Louris, Ann Magnuson, Will Oldham and Marie Sioux. The group released the well-received debut album, "Lake Bottom LP", in 2008. In addition, they have performed at tribute concerts for Harry Chapin and toured nationally on their own. Jessica has taken a leave of absence from the band to raise her new baby, but Abigail and Lily have continued to perform and record as a duo. Abigail and Lily starred as two of the title characters in the 2009 short feature, The Sirens (2009). In the spring of 2010, the Chapin Sisters toured with the indie folk band, She & Him, both as members of the group and as an opening act for same. The Chapin Sisters also released their second full-length album, "Two", in August of that same year.
