  • Melvyn Ternan graduated University in 2001 with a first class degree in Animation.

    After his graduation, Melvyn moved to Bristol and worked as an animator and compositor on "The Day of the Subgenius" at Bolex Brothers. After completing the film he then co-founded Collision Films with Ben Foley and Chris Hopewell, working as web designer for the company and compositor / DOP on "The Wildhearts" pop promo 'So into you' in 2003.

    Melvyn then left Collision Films in 2003 and co-founded 'Paradise pictures' with Emma Landolt, working as animator, compositor and lighting technician on "The Spoilt Earth". Melvyn continued working at Paradise Pictures as animator, compositor and studio manager on various creative projects until 2006 when he set up his own freelancing business 'Melmation'.

    During his time at Melmation, Melvyn Worked on various client projects ranging from filming and editing to animation and digital compositing as well as running animation workshops at community centers and libraries across Bristol. Melvyn also continued to work on various pop promo's, including 'Make it look good', by Kid Carpet - '4 Million ways' by General Midi - 'A City on Fire' by Fightstar.

    After completing over 150 various freelance projects, Melvyn moved to Sheffield, England in 2009 and started lecturing in Animation at Sheffield Hallam University. In 2012, Melvyn became Senior Lecturer and Course leader for Animation at Sheffield Hallam University. In 2013 Melvyn authored his first book "Stop Motion Animation - How to make and share creative videos", published by Barrons and translated into 5 different languages. In 2017 Melvyn won the 'Inspirational Teaching' award at Sheffield Hallam University.

    Having supervised over 170 different student grad films, Melvyn continues to work as Senior Lecturer in animation as well as provide voices for various animation projects. His University research is primarily based on 'Pedagogy within Animation', 'Lost methodologies' and 'Temporality of workflow'.
