Mini bio

  • Luis Galán is a 300-plus award-winning director, screenwriter, editor and producer from Spain. Classically trained, he graduated in Malaga's drama school, earning a second degree in Cinema Direction in Madrid, and winning both, the Extraordinary Award from the city, and the National Award for most outstanding student in the country. As an actor, he studied with David Perry (Royal Shakespeare Company) and performed in theatre and some tv productions for several years. Then he wrote and directed the musical play Un Cuento de Hadas (A Fairy Tale), winner of the Málaga Crea Award. He then moved to developing TV shows, directing music videos (Sony Music) and directing/producing commercials and corporate videos for Google, Mitsubishi and Motorola among others.

He created his own television show in 2008 on TeleMadrid, worked in RTVE's Águila Roja Aguila Roja, and then he launched his career as a filmmaker with three films (short), all of which were screened at the Cannes Film Festival (2013, 2014 and 2015), winning more than 100 awards worldwide. In 2015 he began an astonishing run as a documentary filmmaker with AnorMal (Senegal, Colombia) premiering in 2017 to international acclaim, and accomplishing the Guinness World Record as the most awarded short film documentary film ever made (140). He then traveled to Beijing to direct several projects including The First Outbreak (aka Wuhan Zona Cero), the most awarded real-action documentary feature of 2021 worldwide, before returning to Spain to work in the Prime Video series Parot and La Leyenda Blanca.

He also taught workshops and masterclasses in screenwriting and direction and received a special tribute and the 'Honorary Award' at the Calzada Calatrava Film Festival (El Deseo, Pedro Almodovar). The Spanish press have named Luis "the future of auteur cinema" for his humanism and ability to touch audiences deeply through his lens and words.
