Malena was born and raised in Denmark. Her father was the conductor and composer, Aksel H. Mathiesen. Her mother is German and is a soloist and professor in music. Her father-in-law is Harry Belafonte.
She started performing at the age of 3. Malena was part of an all girls group, Wilhelmina, that performed on Fernseh Garten in Germany and toured the country promoting their album stay. It was never released in Denmark.
She did music videos with Carol King as well as Melle Mel and Scorpio, whom David Belafonte worked with when he produced the movie and soundtrack for Beat Street before they met each other.
