  • Thales Junqueira was born in 1987 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Currently living in Recife, he is a Production Designer and Art Director. Throughout his career he has collaborated with important names in Brazilian cinema, such as Anna Muylaert, Gabriel Mascaro, Kleber Mendonça Filho and Sandra Kogut.

    In 2014 he had his first production design credit on a feature film on The second mother, by Anna Muylaert. Selected as the Brazilian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, the film was awarded at Sundance and Berlin film festivals.

    Along with Kleber Mendonça Filho, he did the production design on Aquarius, which had its premiere in the Official Selection at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d'Or. Also with Mendonça Filho, he was the production designer on Bacurau. The film, directed by Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, won the Jury Prize in the Official Selection at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

    Together with Gabriel Mascaro, Thales conceived the visuals of a futuristic Brazil on Divine Love, which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and received critical acclaim in renowned international publications. He was also the production designer on the anarchic film Sol Alegria, by Tavinho Teixeira, which had its world premiere at the 2019 Rotterdam Film Festival and on Don't call me son, by Anna Muylaert, which premiered at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival.

    His most recent projects include the upcoming films Rio Doce, by Fellipe Fernandes, and O Prisioneiro da Liberdade, by Jefferson De, which tells the story of Luiz Gama during the slavery period in 19th century Brazil.

    Thales Junqueira was awarded for Best Production Design at the Brasília Film Festival for his work in the films Au Revoir, by Milena Times and Delusion is redemption to those in distress, by Fellipe Fernandes. He was nominated for the Brazilian Cinema Grand Prize and for the ABC Award - Brazilian Cinematography Association - for the production design of the films Aquarius, The second mother, Bacurau and Divine Love. In 2020, he won the ABC award for Best Production Design for Bacurau.
