Mini bio

  • Matt Richards is an Australian director and writer whose work spans short films and documentaries. He holds a Master of Film & Television (Narrative) from the Victorian College of the Arts and leads a production studio specialising in art, design, and architecture.

His short film The Disappearance of Willie Bingham, funded by Screen Australia's Hot Shots program, was a breakout success-screening at over 100 festivals, winning more than 50 awards, and reaching millions of viewers online. It explored institutional violence through restraint and implication, provoking debate around moral ambiguity.

Matt's documentary work for the NGV profiled artists including Ai Weiwei, Yayoi Kusama, and Shaun Tan. He's participated twice in the MIFF Accelerator program, was selected for the ADG's 'Ones To Watch', and directed placements on Clickbait (Netflix/NBCUniversal) and Tomorrow When the War Began (ABC).
