Mini bio

  • Clay von Carlowitz is a New York-based actor, writer, director and producer whose work gravitates toward dark comedy, psychological drama and the stranger corners of independent film.

Originally from Northeast Ohio, von Carlowitz studied at Kenyon College before making his feature acting debut in Troma Entertainment’s Return to Nuke ’Em High. He went on to appear in independent films including Liam Regan’s My Bloody Banjo and Michael Walker’s Cut Shoot Kill, as well as two seasons of the acclaimed drama series Here Comes Your Man. His stage work in New York has included John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and performances with Gotham Dance Theater.

Von Carlowitz later appeared in Aimee Kuge’s cult romance-horror feature Cannibal Mukbang as Maverick, the charming and toxic alpha older brother of the film’s protagonist, Mark.

As a filmmaker, von Carlowitz co-founded Abandoned House Productions with his wife and frequent creative collaborator, actor and filmmaker Asta Paredes. He wrote, directed and starred in The Shadow Scarf and co-produced Paredes’ The Slightest Touch.

His latest feature, Listen to Me, marks his most ambitious work as a writer-director to date. Filmed in New York and Northeast Ohio, the darkly comic drama stars von Carlowitz alongside Brendan Dalton, Asta Paredes, Jeremy Holm and Catherine Curtin. The film follows two estranged brothers whose unexpected reunion pulls them back to their Ohio hometown and into confrontation with the family they left behind.

Across his work as both actor and filmmaker, von Carlowitz is drawn to volatile relationships, damaged characters, uncomfortable humor and stories that find tenderness in unexpected places.
