Biography

  • Filmmaker Alexander Karmios, half German, half Cypriot and born in Athens - Greece, was introduced early to the film and fashion industry; he was only 16 when he first participated as a model in fashion shows, character role-plays, and in various TV commercials (1997-2003). At the age of 21, while working as a bartender in Mykonos, he was cast as an extra in The Bourne Identity (2002), which was being filmed on the island. The thrill of this major experience and his passion for film, led to him attending New York College to study film (2003), where he met his favorite teachers and renown filmmakers Pantelis Voulgaris and Yorgos Mavropsaridis, a cornerstone to his career. His next major experience was on the film-set of his teacher's movie Brides (2004), which was being filmed during his college studies. Another college perk was him participating in the feature Straight Story (2006). Alongside all that, his experimentation in photography attracted the attention of leaders in the industry, and he found himself working for various fashion magazines, catalogs, ad campaigns, album covers, and portraiture photography for music artists and bands. His repertoire soon expanded with music video clips and a short film that made it into the 61st Cannes Film Festival, Flat (2008). Alexander Karmios works in the film entertainment industry worldwide as a director, cinematographer, and producer, and is in development and production of several feature, music video & TV commercial projects.

Trivia

  • February 2008: He tried to move to Paris in 2007, but he couldn't live without the Greek sunny weather and returned to Greece.
  • Alex and actress Christina Balanos, who permanently lives in Paris, are first cousins.
  • His youngest brother Markos Karmios, is into film-making as well.
  • He never finished his BA on Film Studies at the NY College. He dropped college, after having his first real experiences participating a film crew in an actual movie set. While announcing to his teachers, that he was leaving, he said: " Learning film-making, is out there in the field, in doing and experiencing and not in how-to books... " [2006].
  • Alexander was originally the cinematographer of the movie The Light Touch (2021), when it first had begun shootings back in September of 2014 in the Greek island Mykonos, with a completely different crew, besides the director. Unfortunately, sometime within the first week of principal photography, the main executive producer had a serious conflict with the "hard to work with" director of the movie Robert MacLean and fired him, so the movie got dropped, until 4 years later that it finally got finished with a different crew. But, not everything was ruined.. Actress Tess Spentzos who was then starring in the movie, became very good real-life friends with Alexander since the shootings and now both of them are already in the process of developing a new film project together, this time with Alexander in the director's chair, as well as him attempting for his first time to co-star with Tess. Stay tuned..
