Biography

Ralph Michiel

Mini bio

  • Born in New York City to Mariam and Yomtov "Sam" Michiel, Ralph Michiel's early years were steeped in the bustling energy of the city. As the youngest of four siblings, he embarked on a transformative journey at the age of 9 when his family relocated to Los Angeles, California. Drawn by the promise of warmer weather and the presence of other Sephardic families, Los Angeles became their new home. Enrolling in schools in South Los Angeles, Ralph quickly acclimated to his new surroundings, attending elementary and junior high while occasionally visiting his father's store (his father made slipcovers and draperies). It was during his junior year at Fairfax High School, after his father shifted his business to Melrose and Western, that Ralph's path took a serendipitous turn. A passion for gymnastics blossomed during his junior high school year, leading him to join the Barons Club Fraternity and then the Gymnastic Team at Fairfax, where he forged a friendship with Jazz Musician, Herb Alpert and met his first wife, Naomi Ginsburg. Continuing his education at Cal State University, Los Angeles, Ralph's plans were momentarily interrupted by his service in the Army after the Korean War. Serving as a Medical Clerk Typist, he seized the opportunity to further his education upon completing his service. Graduating from Cal State University, Northridge with a Bachelor of Education degree, Ralph later earned a Master of Supervision, paving the way for a career in teaching. Family life flourished alongside his professional endeavors, with Ralph and Naomi welcoming their first child, Mitchell, followed by daughter Robbie. As his teaching career spanned over three decades, Ralph found fulfillment in educating third, fourth, and fifth-grade students. It was during his tenure at Haddon Avenue School in Pacoima that he crossed paths with his second wife, Ellen Ruth Weiss, with whom he welcomed daughter Yael and son Aaron into the world. Retiring from elementary school teaching after 35 years, Ralph's passion for life remained undiminished. Embracing new adventures alongside his wife Lori Grossman, a physical trainer for seniors, they found joy in travel and leisurely bike rides along the beach. A twist of fate brought Ralph into the world of acting when an agent, impressed by his bilingual abilities and striking presence, encouraged him to explore opportunities in the industry. This leap of faith led to notable roles in productions like "The Human Condition" (2014), "Hysteria" (2012), and "Roman y Sahira" (2010). His talent garnered recognition, earning him a nomination for Best Actor in a Short Film, "Waiting for You," at the Berlin Festival in October 2016. Through his multifaceted journey, Ralph Michiel continues to inspire with his resilience, passion, and dedication to both family and craft.
