Member of the Federation of Democratic Workers' Associations (DIDF), the Federal Association of Migrant Women in Germany and ver.di.

Member of the Left Party (Linkspartei.PDS); June 1996 to June 1998 member of the state executive committee of the North Rhine-Westphalia state student representation, 1996 to 1998 member of the federal executive committee of the federal student representation, since 2003 member of the federal executive committee of the DIDF, active in social movements and extra-parliamentary groups.

Member of the Bundestag since 2005.
