- Karina Lomelin Ripper is a Mexican-American writer and director whose films often center Latina characters that are rebels, misfits and rule breakers. Their production experience extends across independent films, documentaries and commercials. Her background is in associate producing on projects for National Geographic WILD, The Discovery Channel and HBO Documentary films.
In 2024, Karina was selected for a coveted spot in AFI DWW+ class of 2025. The program supports eight women and traditionally underrepresented narrative filmmakers through the production cycle of a short film. Karina's short film, There's a Devil Inside Me will be showcased at the DGA Theater in 2025.
Karina's previous short film, Chispa, was supported by Fujifilm and premiered internationally at Final Girls Berlin and LALIFF (2024). Their previous short (co-writer/co-director) Superfan, premiered at the Atlanta Film Festival (2022) and was listed as No Budge's top films of the year (2023). Karina'a short documentary, La Tienda, received a Vimeo Staff Pick (2020) and aired on PBS as part of The Latino Experience (2021). Karina was also selected for 2024's Hola Mexico's Tomorrow's Filmmakers Today, a workshop that curates a cohort of up and coming Latino filmmakers.
