Biography

Orsi Nagypal is a Hungarian screenwriter and film director working on features and TV shows since 2011, commissioned by HBO Europe, Lionsgate and MGM+, Syfy and CW USA, and Beta Film Europe. She has directed drama, fantasy, rom-com and satire TV series, helming more than 100 episodes, including 52 as lead director.

Her latest adventure took her to the forests of Sherwood, directing Sean Bean and Connie Nielsen for the latest Robin Hood adaptation for Lionsgate/MGM+.

Between 2022 and 2025, she co-executive produced and directed four episodes of "Rise of the Raven", an epic, action-heavy multilingual period drama about the 15th-century Hungarian war hero Hunyadi, in an international co-production between Canada's Serendipity Point, Hungary's NFI and Beta Film. With a budget of EUR 60 million, the series premiered at MIPCOM Cannes 2024 to critical acclaim and broke Hungarian television viewership records. The show was sold to numerous countries worldwide in 2025 and competed at TIFF 2025.

Her debut feature, "Nyitva / Open", a sexual dramedy about monogamy, premiered at the Montreal International Film Festival in 2018 and was released in Hungarian cinemas in October of the same year.

Between 2019 and 2021, she directed the US indie dystopian drama "The Deal" for acclaimed producer Dean Devlin.

Between 2010 and 2015, she wrote and directed four short fiction films that screened at numerous international film festivals, including Clermont-Ferrand, and won awards around the world. During this period, she participated in multiple international screenwriting workshops and markets, including Binger, Sources2, Ekran, Berlinale Talents and Midpoint.

She is most interested in everyday heroes, human sexuality, strong and complex female characters, and how people find their true selves while struggling with the constraints of society. She enjoys mixing humour with drama, the provocative with the mundane, and lust with awkwardness - much like life itself.

She is also the lead singer and guitarist of the female punk and hip-hop band The PinUps.
