Biography

Dan Farmer is an Australian director and cinematographer known for music videos, award winning short films, and commercial work.

Dan received industry training from Footscray City Film and Television School, where he was recognised and awarded for his innovative and daring approach to filmmaking. Dan undertook further study in Masters in Film & TV at Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in 2016.

Dan first came to attention in 2012 with his Shit on the Liver music video for King Parrot, helping launch the band internationally and toted as 'arguably one of the best extreme metal videos ever made.'

In 2015 Dan was recognised in his home town sweeping the Setting Sun Short Film competition for the film Neighbourhood Watch taking the awards for Best Short Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Film.

Dad Got Fantasy created by Dan, his wife and daughter, went into competition at The 48 Hour Film Project, Melbourne 2018 and took away 3 awards including Best Directing.

Dans directing work on the 2019 short film The Starey Bampire, starring his wife and daughter, won in excess of $100,000 for Best Comedy My Rode Reel 2020, Best Film Sunshine Short Film Festival, Best Film/Cinematography/Director at the Peninsula Film Festival, and collected many more awards reliably voted audience favorite at festival screenings.

In 2020 Dry Fire short film began preproduction but was slowed by covid allowing an extensive rewriting phase. The film was shot and edited early 2021 and premiered at the Academy accredited St Kilda Film Festival where it saw the Best Young Actor Award for its deaf star Catherine Lillian for her acting debut as a teenage killer.

Dan has a natural flair for experimentation, both technically and thematically, pushing the limits of what is cinematically possible with new generation cameras.

Dan most recently began development of Dry Fire into a feature film.
