  • Mariel Brown is a bi-racial, Caribbean-British documentary filmmaker. She is committed to uncovering and documenting the rich and complex history of the Caribbean and its diaspora - particularly in the UK - and elucidating the experience of blackness - both contemporary and historical - as conveyed by the work of artists, writers, historical figures and through significant moments in history. Mariel's film, Unfinished Sentences, a personal exploration of her tumultuous relationship with her late father, writer Wayne Brown, was a finalist at Primera Mirada works in progress competition at IFF Panama, and won best documentary feature awards at trinidad+tobago film festival and Caribbean Tales International Film Festival. Having taken a four-year hiatus from filmmaking to undertake the development role of executive director of FILMCO - where she also ran the trinidad+tobago film festival, ensuring its survival through the Covid pandemic - Mariel has returned to her work as a producer/ director with the film, 'Six Days in 1990', an exploration of the factors that gave rise to the 1990 coup attempt in Trinidad and Tobago. Mariel is a co-founder of the filmmaker collectives CAFTPro and FILMCO, a member of EURODOC BIPOC and a EURODOC 2023 alumna. She lives and works in Hastings, on the south coast of England.
