Subhrajit Mitra is an Indian filmmaker from Kolkata, known for literary adaptations, historical dramas, and documentary storytelling in Bengali cinema. He trained in Computer Science and Software Engineering, studied Ancient Classical Literature at Harvard, and holds an honorary Doctor of Literature from Mother Teresa University, Bengaluru. Early in his career, he worked under filmmakers Asit Sen, Rituparno Ghosh, and Shyam Benegal. He began as a documentary director with Doordarshan at 18, later helming a 52-episode series with ISRO and documentaries for ONGC and the West Bengal Forest Department. His notable documentary work includes Wangala (on the Garo tribes), Himalayas: Unsung, Unseen for National Geographic, and a film on the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War for the BSF, featuring a score by A.R. Rahman. Mitra made his feature directorial debut with Mon Amour: Shesher Kobita Revisited (2008), followed by Aagun Pakhi, the Kakababu film series, and the thriller Chorabali. He gained wide recognition for Avijatrik (2021), a sequel to Satyajit Ray's Apu saga, which won the National Film Award (Silver Lotus) for Best Bengali Feature Film and earned a Best Cinematography win for Supratim Bhol at the 68th National Film Awards, alongside numerous international festival honors. In 2025, he directed Devi Chowdhurani: Bandit Queen of Bengal, a historical drama starring Prosenjit Chatterjee and Srabanti Chatterjee, released during Durga Puja. He served on the Central Jury of the 70th National Film Awards and is currently in pre-production on his next feature, Maya-Mrigaya, and adaptation of the novel "Dui Bon" written by Rabindranath Tagore.
