Biography

Nicholas Weissman is an Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker based in Los Angeles. As a film producer, his work has been featured across a variety of broadcasters and publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times, PBS, HBO, and the National Geographic Channel. His first independent film, The Minutemen, about vigilantes along the U.S. - Mexico border, won the Silver Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival and both Best Documentary and Grand Jury Prize at the Brooklyn International Film Festival. In 2013, he received an Emmy for A Boy Helps a Town Heal, a Sports Illustrated film about the Newtown shooting and in 2014, he produced Am I Next, a documentary about a teenager navigating protests on the streets of Ferguson for Time Magazine. Across his decade long career, he has focused his work on profiling multidimensional characters from their point of view as it relates to macro level social issues. His most recent feature film, For Ahkeem, profiling the juvenile justice system in St Louis, debuted at the 2017 Berlinale Film Festival followed by the Tribeca Film Festival, AFI Docs, Hot Docs, and over 50 other festivals worldwide receiving 7 Best Documentary awards. For Ahkeem went on to premiere theatrically at Brooklyn Academy of Music and was broadcast on PBS in 2018. His most recent project, Thomas Fire Architect, was distributed by Time Magazine Red Border Films and screened at Doc NYC and Hot Springs Film Festival.
