You didn't have to dress up in a cape or a pair of tights to see Dr Feelgood. It wasn't like going to see KISS. We had a really strong connection to our audience because of the way we looked and also through the songs. At the time there was a lot of stuff about hobgoblins, rubbish really, that had nothing to do with anything.

If we'd stayed together, we'd have fitted in perfectly with punk. In fact, we'd have walked all over punk. But by then it was all blowing up in our faces. People were more interested in the Pistols [Sex Pistols] and The Clash. They weren't interested in this band splitting up because of some obscure row. Mick Green was my biggest influence. I just wanted to play like him. I listen to stuff he recorded when he was a bloody teenager that still gives me a thrill.
