Martin Indyk was born on July 1, 1951 in London, England, UK. He was married to Jill Collier and Gahl Burt. He died on July 25, 2024 in New Fairfield, Connecticut, USA.

He grew up in Australia, and graduated from the University of Sydney. He attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and received a doctorate in international relations from Australian National University.
