Biography

Nick Samuel

Biography

  • Nick Samuel is an award-winning composer and arranger whose work spans cinema and television, on productions ranging across advertising, film, network TV and video games.

His work is characterized and driven by music's relationship and synergy with narrative and emotion; with influences rooted in jazz and classical music, and drawing from multiple genres across the board. As well as his musical influences, books, film, images and early studies in fine art play a role in his understanding of music within the context of scoring to film, and the different ways in which melodies 'speak' with an image.

His career started life as a saxophonist and keyboard player, working within a multitude of genres and delivering concert performances and sessions for stage and studio, and working with artists both in London and internationally. A natural transition to composing, first as songwriter and band-leader, saw him forming the group 'Hopper', which went on to receive a finalist accolade for 'Best Alternative Act' at the Indy Awards in 2007.

Nick's career as a composer for film and moving image began in 2009, his broad experience within live music and improvisation heavily contributing in how his music communicates, not only with the image, but also the audience. He started out scoring various short films, including 'Blink' (Canal +) which received a final nomination at 2009's Teaserland Awards in Madrid. Work within the realms of TV and advertising, include clients such as ITV, Tesco, Against Breast Cancer (for DCM) and, most notably, Pearl & Dean - for whom's digital campaign he received the 2013 Music + Sound Award for 'Best Composition in Cinema Advertising'.

He continues scoring for film, working with production companies, studios and directors worldwide; and with Summer 2017 film releases including the acclaimed 'Max Payne: Retribution' and fantasy / horror 'Knights Of The Damned'.

Nick was born in California, and he lives and works in London.
