Li-Da was a refugee, her parents were victims of Cambodia's killing fields, in which more than a million people were killed by the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 1979.

Li-Da went to live in the Cotswolds with her new family, including an older brother, today's Conservative MP Danny Kruger.

The film and documentary director, producer and writer is also a trustee of the Nginn Karet Foundation, which works to improve the economic self-sufficiency of poverty-stricken communities of Cambodia.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she endured IVF and a miscarriage with her husband Matt. She adopted a boy, the adoption process took four years.

    • Quotes
When I'd made the journey and spent two and a half months here and met Cambodians, I realized I was totally English. The Cambodian culture was so foreign to me. I grew up with South African expat parents in England and lived in a manor house and had a very charmed lifestyle. Having had no influences from Cambodia before, it was a huge shock in every single way possible. I didn't really feel connected.
