  • Birth name
    Matthew Joseph Phillion

Biography

  • Matt Phillion was born March 7, 1977 in Somerville, Massachusetts, and later moved with his family to Melrose, MA as a child. He graduated from Melrose High School, and in 1995 completed a degree in English at Merrimack College in North Andover, MA, where he was an active member of the theater community. He decided to "retire" from acting at age 23, spending the next five years pursuing a writing career -- as a local newspaper reporter, freelancer, health care writer, and even comic book industry journalist. On a whim he stumbled into an audition for the short film Iris in 2005. A few months later another short film, Near Greenwood, cemented his renewed desire to work in film again. Since that time, he has appeared in over a dozen independent short films. Livestock marked his feature film debut. In 2009 he will appear in a Web-based television series, Gavin Lance.

Quotes

  • [on letting go] It's time to hold a grand old wake for your ghosts, leave their baggage like flowers around the tombs, and enjoy what you've built for yourself.
  • [on taking it easy] The mercurial side of me generally starts banging on that alarm bell every time the ship slows down. "Don't stop! Do not stop here! More things to see! Keep going!" Clang clang clang!
  • [on love] I can't get that Yeats thing out of my head. "Our souls are love, and a continual farewell." The very thing we're built with, the very materials we are constructed of, is love itself, but it is mercurial and transient and beyond our control. All we are is love, and we always must say goodbye.
