Biography

Chicago-based harmonica player Carey Bell was born in Macon, MS, in 1936. He taught himself how to play the harmonica and has been noted for his skill on the double-reed chromatic harp.

He moved from Mississippi to Chicago with his grandfather, renowned pianist Lovie Lee, and joined his band. He also worked as a sideman and session musician with such artists as Earl Hooker, Honeyboy Edwards and Muddy Waters. In 1969 he recorded his own album, "Carey Bell's Blues Harp", on Delmark. In the 1970s and 1980s he toured with Willie Dixon's All Stars. In 1984 he recorded an album with his son, blues guitarist Lurrie Bell, called "Son of a Gun", on Rooster. He appeared in a documentary about the blues, "Sincerely, the Blues", and has appeared on albums with such musicians as Walter Horton, James Cotton and Junior Wells.
